All About Antioxidants

“Antioxidants” is a term we come across commonly in health discussions but it just comes off as one of those beneficial natural ingredients with a fancy name.

Let's break it down

What are antioxidants? What do they do? Where can we get them?

Just as the word connotes, antioxidants are molecules that prevent and subdue oxidation in the body. However, to be able to properly understand what antioxidants are, it is important to these oxidants that they are fighting against.

What then are Oxidants? And why are they bad for the body?

Oxidation refers to the damage caused by molecules known as Free Radicals. Free radicals according to experts are known to cause harm to the body, especially the cells of the skin causing faster aging, skin wrinkles, sunspots, hyperpigmentation and other general health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis, cataracts, neurodegenerative diseases, among others.

Causes of Oxidation

Free radicals are naturally part of the human system and are generated as a result of normal body processes such as metabolism and reactions to basic life activities such as breathing, eating, and drinking. Essentially, the oxidation process is further enhanced by several factors such as exposure to UV Rays, radiation, stress, bad diets, pest control chemicals, smoking and air pollution, to mention a few.

However, our precious body naturally protects us from the damage of these free radicals, but as we grow older, the body’s defense system against free radicals reduces, therefore causing oxidation.

Is this the end of the road?  - The answer is No

Good News! Nature has blessed us with substances which are now known as antioxidants. They help the body to reduce or prevent the damages of oxidation in the body by fighting these free radicals and ultimately promoting healthy skin, eyes, face, bones, and general body wellbeing.

So Now that I understand what they do? How can I get them?

Antioxidants can be found in food sources rich in Vitamins [A, C, D & E], Omega 3 fatty acids, certain proteins. Examples of easily accessible foods that contain antioxidants include fruits such as apples, berries, oranges, grapes, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, turmeric, sweet potatoes, spinach, green tea, nuts, vegetables, milk, beans, eggs, among others.

While consuming foods rich in antioxidants, it is also important to make use of skin care products that contain antioxidants. These help to specifically defend against sun exposure and UV rays, brighten the skin, improve skin hydration, and reduce the formation of wrinkles. These products can easily be identified by their ingredients which include Aloe vera, Flavonoids, Niacinamide, Retinol, Resveratrol, Polyphenols, and other Vitamin A, B3, C and E substances.
